At FGS Pilcher, our team works to keep waterways clear, farmland productive, and the environment protected. One of our experts, James, has been working in reed and weed cutting for the IDB for over 11 years, and his experience highlights the skill, care, and dedication that goes into every project.
Precision Work in Every Cut
Reed and weed cutting is far from a standard 360 machinery job. James explains:
“You need to be fast but accurate. We work to agreed rates, so you can’t afford overlap or mistakes.”
Depending on the profile of the waterway and the density of vegetation, the distances covered in a day can vary. Some areas require extra care, particularly where the vegetation is thick or sensitive habitats are nearby.
Respecting Wildlife and Landowners
Environmental care is a core part of the job. James and the team carefully navigate land drain outlets, mink rafts, and farmland. Maps of mink traps are provided to avoid disturbing wildlife, and the team works closely with landowners to ensure gates are left shut and property is respected.
“We have to be aware of mink traps, land drains, and wildlife – from birds and small mammals to fish – and make sure we don’t disturb them,” James notes.
Adapting to Weather Conditions
Weather plays an important role in daily operations. Heavy rain, wind, or wet conditions can affect water levels and make work more challenging. The team adapts to ensure safety and minimise any damage to the land.
Memorable Moments on the Job
Working outdoors brings unique encounters. James recalls:
“Occasionally, fish end up in the cutting basket – I carefully return them to the water. I once rescued an eel just over 3ft long!”
He also enjoys witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat, including deer, hares, and kingfishers.
Perks of the Job
Beyond the technical skill, the scenery and wildlife are rewarding. James describes:
“The sunsets and sunrises on Romney Marsh are amazing, and the autumn mist is incredible. That’s the view from my office window!”
