We recently completed a significant package of works at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, supporting the development of new, purpose-built enclosures for five African lions rescued from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The project involved close collaboration with the sanctuary team to ensure the design and construction met the specific needs of the animals, while also aligning with the sanctuary’s high welfare and safety standards. Our scope of work covered both the structural and aesthetic elements required to create secure, enriching habitats that support the lions’ long-term wellbeing.
Key elements of the project included:
- Site preparation, including groundworks, levelling, and turfing
- Installation of functional features such as feeding poles, woodchip and bark areas, sandpits, and footpaths within the enclosures
- Construction of feeding platforms and anti-dig perimeter systems to promote animal safety and care
- Installation of stand-off fencing to provide secure boundaries and controlled public viewing zones
- Addition of landscaping features including decorative Scottish cobbles, wooden planters, and timber goalposts for new signage
We also provided support with internal fabrications inside the lion dens, including structural adjustments and fitting elements. Soil and compost were laid to establish new planting areas around the site, enhancing the surrounding landscape. Surrounding areas were landscaped and completed in time for the Sanctuary’s Open Day, which marked the official opening of the new lion habitat to the press and specially invited guests.
The Big Cat Sanctuary is a 32-acre registered charity, home to over 40 big cats across 11 species, many of which are critically endangered. The new lion enclosures are part of their ongoing commitment to providing high-quality care environments and supporting global conservation efforts.
