Overview

FGS Pilcher were contracted by the RSPB to deliver an island creation project at Burrowes Pit, within the RSPB Dungeness reserve.

As a well-visited public nature reserve, the site attracts birdwatchers and visitors throughout the year. The project involved constructing
four substantial islands within the lake, covering approximately 2,500m², to enhance habitat provision while maintaining the quality
and accessibility of this popular visitor location.

The Challenge 

Working within a sensitive and publicly accessible wetland environment presented several challenges:

• Soft and unstable ground conditions requiring low ground pressure machinery
• The need to minimise disturbance to both wildlife and visiting members of the public
• Maintaining safe access and a positive experience for visitors during the works
• Fluctuating water levels impacting long-term performance of the islands
• Restricted access to working areas due to the nature of the site

Balancing environmental protection with the expectations of a public-facing reserve was key.

The Solution

FGS Pilcher utilised specialist plant and experienced operators to carry out the works efficiently and sensitively.

• Long reach excavators enabled precise shaping and placement of materials from a safe distance
• Excavators fitted with oversized trackpads reduced ground pressure, making them ideal for wetland conditions
• Careful planning of works ensured minimal disruption to visitors and protected key areas of the reserve
• The islands were constructed at carefully designed heights to remain usable in varying water levels and weather conditions

All works were carried out with consideration for both the surrounding habitat and the ongoing use of the reserve by the public.

The Outcome

The completed islands now form some of the largest features within Burrowes Pit and provide valuable new habitat for wildlife.
