Sustainable Water Level Management for Wetland Habitat

Delivering sustainable water management to strengthen wetland habitats and improve resilience to drought

Client: RSPB

off-grid water management

The Brief

FGS Pilcher was appointed by the RSPB to design and install a sustainable, off-grid water level management system at one of its
wetland nature reserves. The project formed part of the RSPB’s long-term habitat management strategy to improve water resilience
and maintain high-quality wetland habitats for breeding and overwintering birds.

Powered entirely by renewable solar energy, the system enables controlled water transfer from the adjacent river into a network
of scrapes, helping to maintain optimum water levels throughout prolonged dry periods while minimising environmental impact.

The Challenge

Changing weather patterns and extended periods of dry weather were reducing water levels across the reserve’s wetland habitats, affecting the quality of important feeding and breeding areas for wading birds.

The RSPB required a robust, low-maintenance solution capable of delivering reliable water level management while operating entirely off-grid. The installation also needed to:

• minimise disturbance to the surrounding habitat
• integrate sympathetically into the reserve
• reduce operational carbon emissions
• provide reliable long-term performance with minimal maintenance
• support the reserve’s ongoing conservation objectives

The Outcome

The new installation provides the RSPB with a reliable, sustainable water management solution that strengthens the resilience of the reserve’s wetland habitats.

Benefits
• Improved long-term water resilience across the reserve
• Consistent water levels within key scrapes
• Enhanced habitat for breeding, feeding and overwintering bird species
• Renewable, off-grid operation with zero operational emissions
• Reduced reliance on fossil fuels and external power supplies
• Low-maintenance infrastructure designed for long-term conservation management

This project demonstrates FGS Pilcher’s expertise in delivering specialist water management infrastructure within environmentally sensitive landscapes. By combining civil engineering, renewable technology and practical conservation experience, we help conservation organisations create resilient habitats that support biodiversity for generations to come.

The Solution

FGS Pilcher designed and installed a fully off-grid solar-powered water management system, incorporating renewable energy generation, automated pumping equipment and engineered water control infrastructure.

Water is abstracted from the adjacent river and transferred into the reserve’s scrapes through a controlled pumping system, enabling water levels to be maintained during periods of low rainfall.

The installation included:

• Solar-powered pumping system requiring no mains electricity
• Engineered water control structure for reliable flow management
• Renewable energy generation through high-efficiency solar panels
• Robust civil engineering works to protect the installation and ensure long-term durability
• Secure fencing and infrastructure designed to operate within a sensitive conservation site

The completed system provides year-round, low-carbon water management while significantly reducing operational costs and ongoing maintenance requirements.
